Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie serves as the 117th elected and consecrated bishop of the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church. Her historic election in the year 2000 represents the first time in the over 200-year history of the AME Church, a woman had obtained the level of Episcopal office. Currently, she is honored to serve as the presiding prelate of the 10th Episcopal District, which is the entire state of Texas.
Bishop McKenzie, well known as an electrifying preacher, has been honored for her leadership, community service, and outstanding achievements by numerous diverse civic, educational, business, and governmental organizations and leaders. She was named by Huffington Post as one of the 50 most powerful women religious leaders in the world.

Cyrus Steele (America's Clean Comedian) was recently selected by HBO for the Comedy Wings Competition. Cyrus Steele has been performing onstage for years but fell in love with stand-up comedy soon after graduating from college. Growing up in the small town of Savannah, Georgia, Cyrus moved to Atlanta in 2005, quickly establishing himself as one of Atlanta's top comics and a master impressionist, imitating everyone from Seinfeld to the presidents!
Dedicated to giving his audience more than a show, in addition to being a part of HBO's Comedy Wings competition, Cyrus most recently has performed for FOX and NBC's "America's Got Talent." He is an in-demand performer at corporate events nationally. He has performed for many Fortune 500 companies. His true calling however is in churches across the country. As a Christian Cyrus loves to bring laughter to everyone!
Covid 19 Protocols for The Gathering 2022
The desire of all of us who are organizing the Gathering, the first in person Texas conference clergy gathering in two years, is for all who attend to do so in a way that ensures the health and safety of all who attend. Toward that end the Gathering will follow these protocols:
Because the elders, deacons, and local pastors of the Texas Conference are a covenant community, we enter into these protocols in a spirit of covenant which is grounded on love for one another, mutual trust, and deep concern for the health and well being of each brother and sister in ministry.
In that spirit, to minimize the health concerns of all who attend the Gathering in 2022 each participant will be expected to do the following:
- Either: Be fully vaccinated before coming to the Gathering. The vaccination(s) should be administered long enough before the event to be fully efficacious. OR if not vaccinated, be tested and receive a negative result for Covid 19 within three days before attending the Gathering;
- Agree to follow protocols regarding social distancing and masking which will be shared with all registrants 14-21 days before the event. These protocols will be consistent with CDC guidelines at that time as well as any that are specific to Lakeview Conference Center. Anyone who registers who chooses not to abide by those protocols will receive a full refund of their registration upon request.
Note: Because we are a covenant community, upon arrival at Lakeview no participant will be questioned as to their faithfulness to the health protocols expected of each participant.
To further ensure the health and safety of all participants of the Gathering in 2022, the organizers are committed to the following:
- Carefully monitor all relevant information and make decisions which will balance our desire to be safe and healthy with our desire to maximize the joy of simply being able to gather together.
- If we determine we simply cannot hold this event in a safe and enjoyable way, to cancel the Gathering with all registrants receiving a full refund.
We look with anticipation to being able to gather together for fellowship, learning, worship, good food, and laughter. We continue to hold up all of our clergy in prayer as you are about the important kingdom work to which God has called you. Please be in prayer for this event as we look toward Gathering as a covenant community.
