A Gathering of Planters and Multipliers
October 24-25, 2019, Houston, Texas
In 2018 the first ever gathering of United Methodist planters in Texas took place in San Marcos. It was a wonderful time of learning and beginning to create a network of relationships. The gathering this year will be held in Houston. Not only will it be a great time of connecting and reconnecting with other planters and multipliers but will offer opportunities to hear from ministry innovators working in various kinds of settings.
The purpose of this gathering is to offer encouragement and practical information for those who want to expand the work of the kingdom in new and innovative ways. You may note that this year we are calling it a gathering of planters and multipliers. We are adding the language of “multipliers” as a recognition that sometimes innovative new ministries are less about starting new churches and more about finding ways to multiply ministry.
- What was the vision for your new faith community?
- How did it get started?
- What are your strategies for connecting with your mission field?
- How do you approach discipleship?
- How has being multi campus helped your ministry?
- What have been the challenges and how have you addressed them?
This gathering is for Pastors and lay people who either are presently involved in planting a new faith community or are exploring possibilities for future new faith communities.
Thursday we will begin at 1:00pm at The Story, a faith community of Saint Luke’s United Methodist Church located at 3741 Westheimer Road, Houston, TX 77027. Our day will conclude with an optional dinner as a part of an alternative faith community experience called Gastrochurch.
Optional Thursday night dinner: Gastrochurch Gastrochurch is an approach to ministry that invites participants to experience spirituality over a dinner table. It’s an approach to ministry that is deeply rooted in scripture but can appeal to people who only see a Bible in a drawer at a hotel.
This ministry has been pioneered by Rev. Meredith Wende Mills. From the Gastrochurch website: Most of our conversation every day is surface-level. How many conversations do you spend talking about the weather? Netflix? How busy you are? We can easily go through life without ever talking about things that matter. We talk about forgiveness, justice, growth, disappointment, gratitude, etc. And we do it over food. Something happens when you share a really good meal that makes meaningful conversation easier. We love getting creative with our themes and menus and seeing where the food takes us.
The workshop continues Friday, October 25th starting at 8:30am. We will meet at The Heights Theater, worship location for the Upper Room, a faith community of Chaplewood United Methodist Church. The address of The Heights Theater is 339 West 19th Street, Houston, TX 77008.
Each individual guest must make their own reservation by booking a room at the Hampton Inn Houston-Near The Galleria or calling the reservations phone number at 1-800-774-1500 no later than October 11, 2019.
Please mention that you are with the Texas Annual Conference to receive the special room rate of $94 plus tax. The standard parking fee of $16 plus tax per night will be waived.
