Texas Annual Conference Response to the Tragedy in Orlando

Date Posted: 6/14/2016

On behalf of the Texas Annual Conference of the United Methodist Church we deplore the harmful act of violence against the citizens of Orlando, Florida.  Specifically we reject the evil evidenced in the senseless killing and injury of dozens of innocent persons in that community.

United Methodists believe that all persons are important because they are created by God and loved by Jesus Christ.  The human community is a place of nurture where persons discover their worth and potential.  When one is harmed, we all suffer.

The senseless violation of these values grieve us.  We mourn with those whose loved ones, family and friends, have been taken away.  We pray for those who cling to life and struggle to regain physical well-being.  We express our solidarity with a community that seeks answers in the midst of confusion and despair.

United Methodists offer our affirmation of the unconditional love of God for all people.  We remind fellow Wesleyans to extend compassionate, grace-filled expressions through word and deed which will stand as a reminder that everyone – including lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender persons – is God’s beloved child.

Today we stand alongside our brothers and sisters of Jewish, Muslim, and other Christian traditions who share our core values of love for each other and for all of God’s children.  Together we seek healing, peace, and an end to violence and fear.
