Retired Clergy and Spouses Retreat October 2-4, 2018

Date Posted: 8/8/2018

The 2018 Retired Clergy and Spouses Retreat will be held October 2-4, 2018 at Lakeview. Join us for food, fun, food, relaxing, visiting, singing, visiting, more visiting and lots of good things!

Every early Fall season the retired clergy and spouses/surviving spouses gather at Lakeview Methodist Conference Center to renew old relationships and begin new ones where found.  This we will do October 2nd – 4th.  Registration has begun, either online through the Heartspring Methodist Foundation website  or by contacting registrar Rebecca Prather at sraprat@gmail.com or 281-299-7609.

ALL retired clergy and their spouses/surviving spouses are encouraged to join us.  We do not want any to miss the event, especially if money may be a little tight; Jim Crawford is always at the ready to provide scholarship funds.  He may be contacted at 936-439-5014.

We want to say a big THANK YOU to the Center for Clergy Excellence in their support of the retreat.  The budget support allows us to keep the cost for the retreat within the reach of our retired colleagues!

The activities of past retreats have ranged from simply visiting with friends to working/learning in small groups to listening to professional presentations on valued topics.  This year, the emphasis will be on simply renewing and growing relationships.

On Tuesday we begin things with some boisterous singing, followed by a presentation by Bishop Scott Jones.  After his presentation and question/answer period, we plan to have some good fellowship, games and (healthy) snacking.

Wednesday is the best day for educational gatherings, and in past years this time has been used for presentations that help us focus on handling future issues.  This year, we intend to focus thoughts on taking care of ourselves after we have been taking care of others for so many years.  The memories of the long-retired clergy may have forgotten some of the surprises experienced in early retirement.  For those of us who are more recently retired, the many ways that life is not quite as we expected are worth talking about.  So we will hear some thoughts from the well-experienced elders and (hopefully) a counselor’s advice.

The last few years have produced many changes at Lakeview, and we know there are more to come.  We are pleased that Matt Idom (if his schedule permits) will take us on a tour of the grounds “hayride style.”  For those who may not be able to ride on the wagon, there are speaker units for the cars, so all may enjoy the information as they follow the track of the wagon.
After the tour, we will have time to speak to an issue near and dear to many of our hearts—showing our love throughout the year to those who are less able to do things like travel to Lakeview.  We spend so much time in our ministries taking care of our congregational members, it should be natural for us to show that same level of concern for our retired clergy and spouses.  But, life changes and the distances increase, so sometimes the expressions of love never get made.  The creation of a Care Team will be discussed by Don White.  We look forward to this development!

An item which has just recently been confirmed is the Wednesday evening dinner.  The Leona General Store steakhouse will cater a special evening meal of char-grilled steaks and chicken breasts!  For those who have not had the pleasure of eating this quality meal, you are in for a special treat!  And while we digest that, the Texas Accent Sweet Adeline Quarter will lift our spirits in song.

After a good night’s rest, we will look forward to a service of remembrance for those who have died since our last retreat.  And after that beautiful service, we bid adieu to our friends and head back to the daily routines of home being refreshed, renewed and rejuvenated.

We look forward to seeing our colleagues October 2nd-4th at beautiful Lakeview!
