ERT: Responding to Help Others
On Sunday, November 1, 2015, Rev. Greg Smith and Old River Terrace United Methodist Church in Channelview hosted a Texas Annual Conference Disaster Ministries Early Response Team comprised of members from around the conference.
The team had responded to the area due to flooding and storm-related damage over the Halloween weekend. Texas Annual Conference Disaster Ministries is a partner member of the Texas Gulf Coast Regional Volunteer Organizations Active in a Disaster (VOAD) which has members present in local Emergency Operations Centers during disasters. Texas Annual Conference Early Responders were specifically requested by the VOAD to assist with damage assessment in the East Houston / Channelview neighborhoods hardest hit by recent flooding.
The team fanned out across several neighborhoods along Hunting Bayou and Greens Bayou. They were seeking to verify damage reported to the city and county by local homeowners and to identify those most in need of relief and recovery assistance. Other ERT members also canvassed neighborhoods in the Acres Homes area of Houston, Friendswood, La Porte, and the Westbury and Meyerland areas of Southwest Houston; areas still recovering from devastating floods during Memorial Day 2015.
Team members from College Station, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Tomball, and Humble responded. Based on the reports submitted by the teams plans are underway for one-day ERT deployments in the coming weeks.
If you are an ERT member, or just someone interested in responding and helping those in need, please contact Rev. Scott Moore at email@example.com with days and times you are available. Teams will be assembled as specific sites are identified and as team members are available.
