Bishop Jones announces retirement
June 17, 2022
To Lay and Clergy Members of the Texas Annual Conference
Yesterday I submitted my letter to the South Central Jurisdiction and the Council of Bishops requesting that I be granted retirement from the active episcopacy as of December 31, 2022.
Since the Judicial Council decision on June 1, I have prayed and thought a lot about my future. On that day I said “As of today . . . I am willing to stay as bishop of the Texas Conference for two more years.” Increasing disobedience and escalating conflict in the denomination have made my service as a bishop of the whole church seem much more problematic. My further reflection has led me to believe that my best service to Christ for the next two years is in retirement. I know that many in the South Central Jurisdiction and the Texas Annual Conference are impacted by my choice, and so I am sharing it with you at this time.
This decision has required much prayer and many hours of discernment and is not made without pain for the many people that this decision will negatively impact. We were humbled by the response of the conference to our announcement that we were probably staying. Mary Lou and I have been blessed to serve here and we wish the Texas Annual Conference a most fruitful future for the Kingdom of God.
Grace and peace,
Scott J. Jones
