An update from the Texas Annual Conference

Date Posted: 11/1/2022

While continuing his ministry as the Director of New Faith Communities, the Rev. Morris Matthis is being appointed to serve as the District Superintendent of the Central North District of the Texas Annual Conference. The Rev. Deborah Hawboldt is appointed as the Interim Director of the Center for Leadership Formation. Matthis' predecessor, the Rev. Dr. Jeff Olive communicated in an email to the Central North District that he will be moving back into pastoral ministry. Dr. Olive stated, “This pastoral role will take me away from the denomination, but my love for the church will not end.”

Bishop Jones noted that Rev. Matthis served as the DS for the Central North District from 2011-2017 and is familiar with the district and many of its lay and clergy leaders. Bishop Jones further noted that as the Associate Director of Clergy Leadership, Rev. Hawboldt is knowledgeable of the priorities of the Center for Leadership Formation and quite capable of assuming the responsibilities as the Director of the Center. Stability and flexibility continue to be values that feed into leadership changes so close to an episcopal transition as the Texas Annual Conference awaits the assigning of a new bishop to be announced on November 5, 2022, and effective January 1, 2023.
