UMCOR Advance - Ways to Make a Difference

Date Posted: 3/22/2012

Climate change is causing sea levels to rise each year, increasing the likelihood of disastrous costal flooding following any kind of serious storm. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) has been working to help some island nations to be ready when disaster strikes.

This year, UMCOR’s International Disaster response chief, Melissa Crutchfield, and the US Disaster Response leader, Rev. Tom Hazelwood, along with consultant Rev. Juan Vera Méndez of Puerto Rico are conducting disaster preparedness workshops in flood-prone nations of the Caribbean.

In February, they led training sessions in Ocho Rios, Jamaica, for the island itself as well as for the Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Islands. In March another was held in Barbados, which also included Guyana, the Leeward Islands, and the South Caribbean. Read more about this training program.

Your gifts to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, help support these important disaster preparedness training sessions.

UMCOR’s Board of Directors is meeting today. Please pray for them as they set the course for UMCOR’s direction for the next six months.

MEDIA: NEW UMCOR WEBSITE has a new look. We hope the new design will make it easier for you to find the information you need. Daily updates will keep you informed about what UMCOR is doing to “Be There” and “Be Hope” in our world.

This new design goes hand in hand with the new Global Ministries website,, of which UMCOR is a part.

Spring tornadoes have already begun and spring flooding is sure to soon follow. You can help families recover from these kinds of disasters by assembling and shipping cleaning buckets. These buckets contain basic supplies to help survivors clean their homes after such an event.

There’s a lot packed into each bucket. Take a look at this video to see how everything fits.

UMCOR’s cleaning bucket inventory is running low. Consider assembling buckets or donating funds toward the purchase of these necessary items that will help families recover. Each bucket costs approximately $55 to assemble. Read more.
