Famine continues to rage throughout the Horn of Africa as the international community finds ways to respond to the pressing needs there.

The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working with partners ACT Alliance, Church World Service, and GlobalMedic in Somalia, Kenya, and Ethiopia to provide food, clean water, and shelter for those have been displaced and are living in refugee camps throughout the region.

Increase awareness and raise support for UMCOR’s response by using UMCOR’s Horn of Africa Crisis church bulletin insert.

Your gifts to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450 and designated to the Horn of Africa Crisis will provide help and relief for those suffering in this famine.

Five months after the massive earthquake and tsunamis in Japan, UMCOR is helping the Japanese people breathe fresh life into their recovery and rehabilitation efforts.

“We were able to provide a lot of initial relief aid to our partners, and now, with the generosity of our United Methodist donors and other UMCOR supporters—who so far have given more than $11 million—we have the resources to pick up where others have left off, and keep going,” said Melissa Crutchfield, UMCOR executive for International Disaster Response.

Crutchfield and UMCOR head, the Rev. Cynthia Fierro Harvey, visited Japan last month to meet with UMCOR partners, survey damages, and observe the pace of recovery. Read more.

Your support for UMCOR Undesignated, Advance #999895, provides for UMCOR’s work where it is needed most.

UMCOR is assisting the Pacific Northwest Annual Conference as they help survivors in Swan, Wash., recover from a February windstorm which whipped up an uncontrollable fire that swept through the town. In all, 120 people were displaced and 20 homes were destroyed.

The UMCOR grant will provide direct assistance to survivors whose needs have not yet been met. They are working with a case manager who works for both Toppenish United Methodist Church and the Yakama Tribal Government. United Methodist Volunteers in Mission will also give assistance.

Gifts to US Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #901670, provide help and relief to people in the US in the wake of all kinds of disasters.

Many of the chocolate candies that will be given away to children this Halloween will come at a great price to children in other countries. Many cocoa farms that provide chocolate to major manufacturers use forced child labor and do not pay farmers a fair price for their product. When you purchase fairly traded chocolates you know that it was produced using ethical practices.

You can purchase fairly traded chocolate miniatures this Halloween as well as materials to raise awareness about the chocolate trade from UMCOR’s partner, Equal Exchange. You can also give to UMCOR’s Sustainable Agriculture and Development Program, UMCOR Advance #982188 which supports small scale farmers.

UMCOR provides emergency relief in many areas of the world.
