Date Posted: 1/10/2013

If you’ve never been to the UMCOR Relief Depot in Louisiana, TAC Disaster Response Consultant Clay Whitaker, is extending a personal invitation to you. He has 10 remaining spots open and promises “you will be exposed to one of the most effective and exciting ministries United Methodism has to offer!”  The work at Sager Brown remains ever critical in the preparation of emergency relief supplies, no matter what the disaster.

Destination: UMCOR-Sager Brown, Baldwin, Louisiana

Dates:         Leave Sunday afternoon, March 3 – Friday evening, March 8

Departure:   Old River Terrace UMC, Channelview, 1 pm March 3

Cost:           $250 per person, includes lodging, meals, round trip transportation and a $20 non-refundable processing fee. Personal cash for snacks and meals while traveling, and one weeknight meal will also be needed.

Deadline:     First-Come, First-Serve

A typical day starts with breakfast at 7:30 am and teams begin working by 9 on a variety of options:

1) work in the 48,000 sq. ft. depot, receiving, sorting, packing, and shipping supplies for disaster relief around the world;

2) work in the local community doing housing rehabilitation;

3) do maintenance projects on the UMCOR-Sager Brown campus;

4) work in the A/C Sewing Room (school bags, layettes, etc.); or

5) tutor at the local school.

After lunch, volunteers typically work until 3:30 or 4 pm, but additional rest is encouraged if needed.  After dinner, team members relax and all attend Thursday evening worship in the Sager Brown Chapel. Adds Clay, “This trip is ideal for all ages.  My Dad went when he was 85 and had the time of his life!”

Preference will be given to first-timers. The down payment of $125 (one half the total and non-fundable) is due by Wednesday, January 23, 2013, which will be followed by required forms. The remaining $125 is due on Wednesday, February 27, 2013. Make the check payable to Old River Terrace UMC, and earmark it: Sager Brown Trip.
