Bishop Huie Welcomes BMCR Conference to Houston
There will be proactive discussions about the challenges facing 21st Century congregations at the annual South Central Jurisdiction Can we Talk? Conference hosted by Black Methodists for Church Renewal (BMCR) in mid-October in Houston. Bishop Janice Riggle Huie will welcome members of the caucus as well as Bishop Earl Bledsoe and Bishop Robert Hayes who are featured speakers.
According to Juanita Jackson, local chapter treasurer and conference steering committee coordinator, “The three Bishops will speak to legislation approved at General Conference and how the New Structure may impact local congregations.” Adds Ms. Jackson, “Not only did the Houston Chapter agree to host the 2012 annual meeting, we supported the recommendation to be the test case for hosting a combined SCJ-BMCR Annual Meeting in conjunction with the annual Can We Talk Conference to minimize participant’s time and travel expenses.”
The 2012 annual meeting, held at the Hobby Airport Marriott, will feature a keynote address from Professor Joe Daniels who has served Emory Fellowship in Washington, D.C. as pastor for several decades. The church has received awards for evangelism and urban ministry, and is one of the 25 churches representing the denomination’s “Strengthening the Black Church for the 21st Century” initiative.
