Honoring Mother’s Day Sensitivities

As Mother’s Day approaches, churches often have “Muffins for Mom” or special awards honoring motherhood milestones. Mothering in any fashion is not for the faint of heart, and generally a great way to express gratitude to anyone who played a vital role in your life. However, it is important to realize the reality that Mother’s Day for many also brings great disappointment and heartache from the pain of loss, abuse or a feeling of worthlessness.
If your church pays tribute to moms, perhaps you can widen the field to cover foster and mentor moms, stepmoms and spiritual moms, grand moms and adoptive moms along with the “soccer moms” being recognized. A comforting theme verse might be: Isaiah 66:13 “As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you; and you will be comforted over Jerusalem.”
