Leaders Give Church Changes Yellow Light

5/16/2011
Members of the Connectional Table, meeting May 9-11, suggested drivers of the Interim Operations Team should proceed cautiously through intersections within The United Methodist Church. The team is considering seven structural changes team members hope will increase the number of vital congregations as the result of findings by the former Call to Action team. Team members asked the Connectional Table to respond to seven proposals with a green, yellow or red traffic light. Forty-one members of ...

Leaders Ponder Funding, Structural Changes

5/11/2011
In an effort to promote more vital congregations, United Methodist leaders are weighing proposals that would dramatically change church funding and the denomination’s agencies. The possible changes under consideration include: Combining general-agency functions into fewer groups. Establishing a new agency that would coordinate connectional ministry among the agencies. Changing the funding formulas for the general church and annual (regional) conferences. Illinois Area Bishop Gregory V. Palmer ...

According to the National Weather Service, 600 tornadoes were recorded in the United States in the month of April alone. Today, communities along the Mississippi River are bracing ...

Children Learn About the World and Mission

5/10/2011
The Children's Fund for Christian Mission is a creative way to harness children's natural enthusiasm for learning about and caring for one another and the world. Teachers, teens, parents, pastors, and kids in United Methodist churches can use the online resources to connect with children and issues around the world.  Each year, mission educators from Global Ministries choose four under-funded projects--two from the US and two from the global church to emphasize what being in mission means. This...

Bishops to Change Ecumenical Agency

5/10/2011
United Methodist bishops have voted overwhelmingly to support folding the denomination’s ecumenical agency and its work into the Council of Bishops. The May 2 vote came at the urging of the Rev. Stephen J. Sidorak Jr., the top executive of the agency, the United Methodist Commission on Christian Unity and Interreligious Concerns. Under the proposal, the agency would cease to exist as a separate entity, and its staff members would work for the council as part of the newly created Office of ...

Survivors of Human Trafficking: Not Without Hope

5/10/2011
“Not without Hope,” the walls of the shelter seem to whisper to new arrivals, survivors of human trafficking in Armenia. Here, in an ambience of trust and encouragement, residents re-learn the meaning of hope after seemingly endless years of sexual servitude and forced labor.   The shelter is part of a broader human-trafficking awareness, prevention, and response program of the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR). This month, the United Methodist Women’s Division is joining UMCOR in ...

The unification of the Methodist Episcopal, Methodist Episcopal South, and Methodist Protestant Churches to create the Methodist Church in May, 1939, is widely known as the great historic event of 20th century Methodism. What is less well known is that several Northern and Southern churches merged with each other before their denominations did.   Read more at the Texas Methodist History Blog
