At Trinity United Methodist Church in Beaumont, Texas, the sound of children’s laughter will soon fill the halls once again as the church’s weekday preschool program resumes after Labor Day. Their program offers a holistic approach to early childhood education that combines academics with spiritual and physical activities.
“We offer a comprehensive curriculum that goes beyond the basics of a typical preschool,” says Dr. Nathan Hodge, pastor of Trinity UMC. “Our program is state-accredited and includes not only academic learning but also spiritual and includes a chapel service, missions, art, yoga, and of course, everyone’s favorite—recess.”
Hodge said that historically, many of the families who joined were first introduced to the church through their day school. “When they were looking for a church home, we were kind of the first place they came to, to have a connection with the church and with the faith community.” He added that the school and church raised $300,000 to pay for recent renovations to the playground and they are ready to kick off the new school year.
Trinity UMC’s commitment to education extends beyond their preschool. The church has also established a successful tutoring program at nearby MacArthur Elementary School. Hodge noted that last year volunteers dedicated over 200 hours to help students improve their reading skills. This program, known as Trinity Tutors pairs volunteers with small groups of students who need extra help, ensuring they have the support necessary to thrive academically.
“For us, it’s part of our mission to love and support our community,” explained Dr. Hodge. “By helping these children with their reading, we’re not just improving their academic performance; we’re also giving them the tools they need to succeed in life. For these kids especially, it’s to help them be able to thrive and not just barely make it by. For us, it’s part of who we are and the church is here to help kids.”
As part of their back-to-school initiatives, Trinity UMC has planned several special events to welcome students and support families. In August, the church will hold a “Blessing of the Backpacks” ceremony, offering prayers and blessings for students and teachers in the community. School supplies will be provided as part of their ministry to the community.
A back-to-school ice cream party is scheduled for September, kicking off the church’s monthly Kids Night Out program. This event provides a fun and safe environment for children while giving parents a well-deserved break. Hodge said each month, Kids Night Out attracts around 30 children who participate in various activities designed to foster community and spiritual growth.
Trinity UMC also hosts “Fearless Moms,” a support and parenting group that meets monthly. Starting in September, this group provides a vital support network for mothers, offering encouragement and practical advice in a welcoming environment.
Hodge said supporting education is central to who they are as a church and emphasized that it is important that children have a place to participate and are active in the community.
