Preparing for General Conference 2019
By: Sherri Gragg
Bishop Scott Jones travels to all nine districts January 6 -12, 2019, for to discuss The Way Forward with clergy and laity.
As the Special Session of the General Conference draws near, Bishop Scott Jones will visit all nine districts in the Texas Annual Conference to help both clergy and lay leaders prepare for the General Conference, as well as life and ministry together after February 26, 2019. Although attendance to these district meetings is not compulsory, the Bishop hopes clergy and laity will join him in conversation about the future of The United Methodist Church.
“The purpose of our time together in these meetings is to engage in conversation so that we have a better idea of what we all think about the decisions that will be made in the coming months, particularly on how we as lay and clergy leaders can lead well during this time,” said the Bishop.
Unwavering Purpose
During his time with TAC leaders, the Bishop will reaffirm their holy calling to “make disciples for the transformation of the world,” through evangelism, worship, discipleship, missions, stewardship and a continued faithful service in the Conference initiative- “We Love All God’s Children.”
“The main thing is to keep the main thing the main thing,” said the Bishop. “In difficult times it is more important than ever to focus on our purpose and alignment of resources to achieve that purpose.”
Life Beyond General Conference 2019
Additionally, the Bishop will take time during the meetings to alleviate any lingering confusion concerning the three complex plans before the General Conference before preparing Conference leaders for life, ministry, and courageous leadership after the final plan is chosen. The Bishop will spend time casting a vision for ministry after the historical decision is rendered as well as empowering clergy and laity to lead well in difficult times.
The event will conclude with small group discussion and time for the Bishop to answer any remaining questions.
If clergy and laity are unable to attend the event for their district, they are welcomed to attend in a neighboring district. No RSVP is required.
