Certified Lay Ministry (CLM)
What Is a Certified Lay Minister?
A certified lay minister is a certified lay servant, certified lay missioner (or equivalent as defined by his or her central conference), who is called and equipped to conduct public worship, care for the congregation, assist in program leadership, develop new and existing faith communities, preach the Word, lead small groups, or establish community ministries as part of a ministry team with the supervision and support of a clergy person. A certified lay minister is assigned by a district superintendent in accordance with ¶419.2. (2016 Book of Discipline, ¶268.1)
CLM Group Consultation Meetings

These meetings include a program covering educational ministry material, fellowship and question and answer period. All are welcome to attend. They are held on Saturdays from 10 am to 12 noon.

To be eligible to attend a CLM training module, a candidate must: (1) Be a Certified Lay Servant and have completed an Advanced Lay Servant Course within the past three (3) years; (2) Be a member of a United Methodist Church; and (3) Complete and have on file in the Conference Office a CLM Application with all requirements included on the application.
Certified Lay Servant (CLS)
Lay Servants are to serve the local church or charge in any way in which their witness or leadership and service inspires the laity to deeper commitment to Christ and more effective discipleship. This includes the interpretation of scriptures, doctrine, organization, and ministries of the church. Learn More
COURSES to be offered:
BASIC Course with instructor Certified Lay Minister, Glen Barnhill,
Introduction to Lay Ministry. This course is foundational for all courses in Lay Servant Ministries. Participants are encouraged to discover and employ personal spiritual gifts as God intended and to consider the importance of exercising servant leadership, developing future leaders, remaining accountable in their discipleship.
Advanced Course: Each One a Minister: Using God’s Gifts for Ministry, author: William J. Carter, with instructor: Certified Lay Minister, Dr. Joan Appleton. This course helps one understand spiritual gifts and how God’s gifts to you fulfill mission and ministry in the body of Christ and the local church. This course of study teaches one what spiritual leadership means and how to be equipped to lead others in understanding and using their spiritual gifts.
