Historic Texas Church Burns to the Ground

More than 100 years of history and memories went up in smoke on Wednesday, Oct. 16 when Wallace UMC burned to the ground. While the historic church has lost its building, the congregation stands together, mourning the tragedy while stepping forward to build for the future.

Disaster Relief Training was Perfect Timing

Divine is the only way to describe the timing of FUMC Conroe’s disaster relief training session, which was held the weekend before Tropical Storm Imelda rained down on the area. A new crew of volunteers were made ready by Mission Center assistant Christine Riggle – only days before she would need their assistance herself.

Bishop Jones Leads Lay Academy on Evangelism to Strengthen Congregations

While a Pew Research Study shows that about eight-in-10 African Americans identify as Christians, statistics are rising for those who identify as religiously unaffiliated, increasing to about 18 percent. In fact, the average worship attendance for majority of the African American United Methodist Churches in the TAC has fallen below 250.

Cabinet Ordinand Mission Trip

Bishop Scott J. Jones looks forward each year to a mission trip he takes with District Superintendents and ordinands. It’s a time to get to know one another – and to join together to work on a worthy cause.  The team recently returned from their annual trip, which took them to South Texas, where they helped construct a house from the ground up.

New Spanish Language Worship Community
Begins Next Month

This past weekend, Servants of Christ UMC in Houston hosted its first Día de la Hispanidad on campus. The church celebrated Latino heritage, complete with prizes, raffles, bingo and piñatas, as well as the culinary delights, tacos, pupusas, casamiento and chuletas. The event also marks the launch of a new Hispanic community at the church. A Sunday sermon in Spanish will begin on Nov. 3.

JFON Houston Part of $2 Million Grant
to Help Asylum Seekers

Justice For Our Neighbors Houston (JFON Houston) announced today they have been chosen to partner with the United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) and Church World Service to be part of a $2 million project aimed at helping asylum-seekers in Houston, Florida and New York.
