Russell Memorial UMC in Wills Point wanted to do something special to help area students excel – and after years of searching for a program that fit the bill -- decided to simply start its own. The church’s mentorship program at Wills Point Middle School launched this fall and is already making a positive impact.

Houston Churches Help Neighbors Recover & Offer Safe Haven After Explosion

When a Watson Grinding and Manufacturing building exploded in northwest Houston early in the morning on Friday, Jan. 24, hundreds of nearby homes and businesses were damaged. Two deaths were reported, 18 individuals headed to the emergency room and about 48 residents in the neighborhood sought shelter. Area UMC churches were ready to help.

The College Pastoral Internship Project is designed to encourage a diverse group of gifted young candidates to enter pastoral service in the Texas Annual Conference, and to equip local congregations to identify and encourage persons with appropriate gifts and graces and a clear sense of call to commit to pastoral ministry.
