Virtual Choirs Inspire Social Connection During Easter and Beyond

Coronavirus can’t stop choirs in the Texas Annual Conference. When the pandemic required social distancing in March, it seemed choir rehearsal would become impossible, especially when the recommended gathering size dropped below 10 and then shelter-in-place became the standard. Rev. Suzi Byrd, Pastor of Music and Worship at St. Stephen's UMC in Houston, however was determined to keep the music going.

Methodist Church Shares TV Broadcast with Sister Churches During Coronavirus

Coronavirus did not thwart plans at Trinity UMC in Beaumont to keep its congregation connected. Senior pastor Rev. Tommy Williams explains that his church has worshiped live for decades, appearing on KFDM TV Channel 6 every Sunday morning. Now, the congregation is welcoming guest pastors from sister churches to join the broadcast, so they can reach out to their congregants as well.

Despite the Virus, Churches Get Innovative in Celebrating Palm Sunday

First UMC Brenham and Wesley UMC in Beaumont aren’t letting coronavirus stand in the way of celebrating Palm Sunday. Both of these congregations in the Texas Annual Conference have discovered innovative ways that their members can join together – celebrating from the safety of their vehicles – to worship and have fellowship.

Amid Pandemic, Lydia Patterson Faces Difficulties Due to Border Closing

Lydia Patterson Institute was already technologically equipped for the coronavirus-related shutdown of all schools in El Paso, Texas, that began March 16. The bad news is that because of a shutdown of the Mexican border a few blocks away from the school, parents have not been able to cross from Juarez to pay their children’s tuition.

Churches Work Together to Host Health Fairs

Before the coronavirus started to shut our country down, St. Stephen’s UMC in Houston partnered with its neighboring church, St. James Lutheran and HISD to host the Northwest Community Health Fair. Together, the churches brought together 119 volunteers to serve 700 guests. The effort, senior pastor Rev. Nathan Lonsdale Bledsoe said, was such a success that St. Stephen’s plans to make it an annual event.

Q&A Get to Know Your Delegates

The General Conference has been delayed amidst the global coronavirus pandemic. Instead of heading to Minnesota in May 2020, delegates will wait until 2021 for the event. Delegates are making critical decisions in the interim. In the Texas Annual Conference, 18 delegates have been elected. Let’s meet one of our delegates, Pastor Kenneth Levingston.

Rev. Karen Jones Named District Superintendent

Rev. Karen Jones has faithfully served First United Methodist Church, Center for the last five years. In addition to Center First, Karen has also served appointments at Liberty Springs, Geneva, McMahan Chapel and Hemphill. During college she also served as the youth director at Gilmer First UMC. Jones currently serves on the Core Leadership Team and the Strategic Mapping Team.

Pre-Conference Meetings Cancelled

These meetings were scheduled for April 19-21 & 26, 2020. It is our plan to share the links to the Pre-Conference Journal and the Strategic Mapping Team’s Report no later than April 29, 2020.
