God gives small church big numbers for afterschool program

After classes end on Wednesday, a school bus arrives at the elementary school in Alto, Texas. Children eagerly await for those bus doors to open and for the drive to A. Frank Smith UMC. These students attend an afterschool program called Kids for Christ (KFC). The church provides space to play and a meal for the children at no cost.

How to build a thriving community this Easter

As COVID cases drop lower, and in-person church service resumes, this Easter marks the return to celebrating the good news with each other. Congregations in the Texas Annual Conference found creative ways during the pandemic to keep Easter alive. Now, churches are finding the festivities they started in the face of COVID concerns are worth maintaining. These innovative Easter events provide an avenue for evangelism, fellowship and fun.

Outdoor art space now accessible to working poor

Pitched in the parking lot at St. Paul’s UMC in Houston are Art Tents – creative spaces for those experiencing homelessness. Guests, who are waiting for meals and donations from the Emergency Aid Coalition (EAC) on campus, are invited to step inside and pick up a paint brush or drawing materials. The result has been transformative for both participants and the volunteers who run the ministry. An exhibit of the works created will celebrate the healing power of artistic expression.

How to cure preacher’s block

Got preacher’s block? The struggle is real, explains Rev. Jessica LaGrone, Dean of the Chapel at Asbury Theological Seminary in Wilmore, Kentucky. Almost every clergy member can relate to struggling to start a sermon. The solution, however, may be simpler and closer than you think. In January, LaGrone launched an online co-working space called “Preacher’s Block,” and it’s quickly becoming a go-to for pastors.

Looking for a way to worship without leaving the house?

A number of churches in the Texas Annual Conference are posting sermons online.

You don’t have to miss a service if you’re out of town or if you prefer to stay at home. Viewers can also enjoy multiple preaching styles and even virtually “attend” different churches. There’s a lot going on Sundays in the TAC that you won’t want to miss.

Sermons are often available to livestream on Sunday and several congregations also record services for on-demand viewing.

We would like to include your church in this list. Please let us know if you are posting a resource online by sending a link to: communications@txcumc.org.
