Texas Youth Academy (TYA) is unique in its profound confidence of teenagers' capacities for theological leadership and a commitment to giving these young people concrete opportunities to put this into practice. Each opportunity cultivates adolescents’ ability to wrestle with thorny theological subjects, giving them confidence in their faith

agency.  They also encounter a myriad of ways in which others live their lives for God.

Spirit Journey – A Spiritual Renewal Experience

Spirit Journey is a 3 day, 2 night faith-enriching experience presented in conjunction with the Texas Conference and Upper Room Ministries. In its fourteenth year, Spirit Journey is headed up by a team of lay and clergy from across the Conference.

It will be held October 17-19 at Lakeview Conference Center, this year’s presenter will be Amy Oden, Ph.D. who is currently a professor at Saint Paul Seminary in Oklahoma City, OK. Dr. Oden is a sought-out speaker and retreat leader and will lead from her most current book, Right Here Right Now: The Practice of Christian Mindfulness. She will guide retreat participants in rediscovering the ancient Christian practice of mindfulness. Prayerful attention to God’s presence “right here right now” leads us deeper into our relationship with our Creator.

On March 29th and 30th a Lay Servant Training was held in Mt. Pleasant, Texas at Tennison Memorial United Methodist Church in the North District of the Texas Conference. The District Lay Servant Ministries Director, Rev. Ross Hyde reported to me that there were 28 participants. Now, this is the average number of attendees for many Lay Servant Trainings, but the most exciting part of the weekend was the group that attended from Joaquin United Methodist Church. This small membership church brought 14 members to participate in the lay servant training courses being offered. The members drove over three hours to attend the training; the majority of whom were first time participants in the Basic Course Class. What a joyous praise to God to see so many of His people desiring to become better equipped servants for Him!

We are blessed in our Conference to offer Lay Servant Training in several districts several times a year. The dates and times are listed on the Conference website on the “Lay Ministry Page”.   A United Methodist Laity can become a Certified Lay Servant by receiving the recommendation from their pastor and local church council and completing the Basic Course and one Advanced Course provided by UMC Discipleship Resources.

We are happy to announce that we recently added Certified Lay Minister, Jeff Scearce, as our Lay Ministry Contact for the Houston area of the Texas Conference. The Houston area churches and pastors can now assist their laity who are interested in lay ministry training by also reaching out to Jeff for direction and guidance. Jeff is a member of Deer Park UMC in the South District. He and I will also be working together on setting up CLM trainings and meetings in the Houston area. We thank him for offering his services and know his participation will help our ministry grow. Below is Jeff’s contact information.
