Bellaire United Methodist Church in Houston, TX seeks a quarter-time, year-round organist/pianist for its weekly traditional worship service. The ideal candidate is experienced, energetic, and passionate about what creative traditional worship can be while displaying a servant’s heart. Our desire is to model for the modern church what a well-rounded, robust music program can be, both to its congregation and the surrounding community. 

Weekly responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: 

●      Accompanying the adult choir during Wednesday evening rehearsals 

o      Ability to quickly transition between playing vocal lines and accompaniment 

o      Open score reading when necessary 

o      Leading a rehearsal and/or sectional should the need arise   

o      Preparing repertoire prior to rehearsal  

●      Providing organ and/or piano music for the Sunday morning traditional service and for other special services as they appear on the Christian calendar (Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, Holy Week, etc.) 

o      Display familiarity with standard hymns and liturgical responses

o      Ability to collaborate with professional and volunteer instrumentalists and vocalists 

●      Accompanying for rehearsals and special performances for any choir as scheduled by the director of traditional worship. 

●      Playing for weddings (at the organist’s discretion regarding availability and rate).

●      Playing for funerals (must be accommodated whenever possible or an alternate found).

 

The successful candidate will report directly to and collaborate with the Director of Traditional Worship. The position’s hours are varied and will require weekday, evenings, and weekend work. Bellaire United Methodist Church possess a Moller three-manual organ that has been updated within the last year in addition to a Kawai RX-3 professional grand piano and a Yamaha G2 grand piano in our sanctuary and rehearsal spaces, respectively. 

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of five years experience playing organ and piano in a traditional worship setting and a bachelor’s degree in music. Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications.
