Director of Children's Ministries - Lakewood UMC
The Director of Children’s Ministry is a full-time position at Lakewood United Methodist Church with primary responsibility for the oversight and administration of all children’s educational and fellowship ministry within the church. The Director will be accountable to the Senior Pastor, Staff Parish Relations Committee, Pastor of Spiritual Formation, and other assigned pastors in planning and providing for a meaningful children’s ministry. The Director will also work closely with other members of the pastoral and program staff in discerning and giving direction to the total ministry of the church.
-Planning and leadership of Sunday morning learning programs, specifically classes for those within the nursery and children’s departments (up through fifth grade). The Director will also give oversight to the teachers of each group and will coordinate each of their groups with the ministry needs of the congregation.
-Planning and leadership of events outside of Sunday morning, including but not limited to: Vacation Bible School, Summer Camps, Summer Family Events, Advent Events, and Lenten Events.
-Evaluating, constructing, and implementing a vision for reaching out to children and families in our community who are not currently involved in the life of the church.
-Evaluating, constructing, and implementing a vision for continued discipleship in children’s ministry, along with creating consistent learning and growing opportunities for both children and their families.
-Maintaining, ordering, and possibly creating curriculum resources appropriate to the age of each group while taking care to ensure that all resources are consistent with the United Methodist Church’s teaching and doctrine.
-Supervise and manage all children’s ministry staff.
-Represent children and their families with other ministry areas within the church.
-Preparing annual budget requests involved with children’s ministry, including the use of both operating and designated funds.
-Attending and participating in meeting such as weekly staff meetings, children’s ministry team meetings, weekly supervisory meetings, Church Council meetings, the Charge or Church Conference meetings, occasional executive team meetings, and others as appropriate.
-Complying with Lakewood United Methodist Church Safe Sanctuary Policy to recruit, train, and equip individuals to serve in various learning groups and ensuring that each participant is treated with dignity and respect.
-Working cooperatively with district and conference education programs, along with other community events, that will complement and benefit the children’s ministry at Lakewood United Methodist Church.
-Other duties as assigned by the pastoral staff which are appropriate for the skills and abilities of the individual.
-Extensive and successful experience in children’s education
-Bachelor’s degree in education, biblical studies, or early childhood studies is preferred, but not required for application
-Evidence of personally spiritual maturity, knowledge of scripture, and an understanding of Christian discipleship
-Strong sense of calling and a heart of service toward others
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
-Ability to visualize, resource, and implement effective programs
-High degree of moral/ethical standards alongside strong integrity.
-Strong interpersonal skills and a willingness to work as a team with other members of the Lakewood United Methodist Church staff and congregation
-Theological agreement with Wesleyan tradition and theology, United Methodist polity, church organization and resources, and United Methodist understandings of the nature of Christian education.
