Next Laity Unleashed Leadership Class Forming for January

Date Posted: 11/13/2014

It’s free – and fun. If you are a layperson who is hungering for a way to discern and use your unique gifts to serve, then check out the upcoming Laity Unleashed sessions, an interactive small-group-style class supporting the TAC goal of “Creating Transformational Lay and Clergy Leaders.”

Fun, free and facilitated are three words to describe the upcoming Laity Unleashed leadership training class that is scheduled to kickoff on January 10 with a 6-hour get- acquainted retreat. Graduates of the first Laity Unleashed class and coordinator Leah Taylor urge those that are interested to contact her and claim the remaining spots.

Rev. Stacy Pever Anzick, pastor of First UMC, Magnolia is part of the Lay Leadership Development Team and describes the class as “an intensive experience for the layperson who yearns to live out God's call in an extraordinary way.” Adds Stacy, “It is designed to facilitate the discovery of that powerful place where spiritual gifts and the needs of the world intersect. Laity Unleashed is about helping each participant discern, acknowledge and follow God's call. The interactive study is built around clergy and lay led weekly sessions committed to enabling each participant to find his or her highest calling.”

Reading and other assignments outside class are integral to the experience, beginning with the book, “From Called to Sent.” Leah shares that, “participants will find enlightenment and motivation through an in-depth look at both scripture and our Wesleyan heritage, and they will be empowered through a variety of self-discovery and skill development activities.”

Leading Beyond Church Walls
Laity Unleashed is not a method of training church committee chairs or conference delegates. Instead, the goal of Laity Unleashed is to move the layperson beyond the structure of the Church and encourage each one to take God's love boldly into the world. Adds Leah, “If you feel the need to contribute to God's kingdom in a more meaningful way, but don't feel called to ordained ministry, Laity Unleashed could be the answer for you!”

Jamie Block is enrolled in the next Laity Unleased session. She describes the process to “be a structured way to explore and develop my skills and gifts that will equip me to respond to the needs of our broader community. I expect to discern/experience God's call in a new way.  Then, I will be able to more fully embrace that call to transform the world.”

Following the kickoff retreat on January 10, the class will meet on Tuesday evenings from 6- 8 p.m. at Memorial Drive UMC in Houston. Those who serve a church within a reasonable distance from Memorial Drive can prayerfully consider who in their congregation might be just right for this journey! Need more info?
