Captain Joe Byrd Cemetery Huntsville: In Remembrance

Date Posted: 10/20/2014

On Saturday, November 1, 2014, please join members of Wesley Memorial United Methodist Church of Huntsville and the Interfaith Center as we lay flowers on the graves of our sisters and brothers who have died in Texas prisons.

The Captain Joe Byrd Cemetery has become the final resting place for many people who have died while serving time in Texas prisons.  Approximately 3,000 people are buried there, either because their families could not afford funeral costs or because no one claimed their body.

Our religious and cultural traditions offer teachings, practices and rituals to help us remember the dead and honor the inherent worth and dignity of every human life. On November 2, many communities will celebrate All Souls Day or Dia de los Muertos. These traditions offer meaningful ways to honor the dead--even those whose choices in life were not perfect.
