HAITI: BUILDING A COMMUNITY-RESPONSIVE HEALTH SYSTEM

In the rural Leogane District, epicenter of last year’s earthquake in Haiti, access to health and other services is limited at best. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is working with partner organization Global Health Action (GHA) to meet basic health and development needs of the poor there.

With UMCOR support, GHA has developed a program to offer continuing education, training, support, and equipment to a core group of community health workers and traditional birth attendants. The program also helps villagers become aware of health and development issues, and offers basic health care.

One hundred percent of your gift to Haiti Emergency, UMCOR Advance #418325 supports programs like this one that help the Haitian people rebuild stronger communities.

RELIEF SUPPLIES: UMCOR WEST MAKES FIRST INTERNATIONAL SHIPMENT

On a cold winter day in Salt Lake City, Utah, a faithful group of volunteers loaded a 40-foot shipping container at UMCOR West Office and Depot. They filled the container with nearly 16,000 school kits for delivery to children in the Gaza Strip.

The shipment is the first in the short history of UMCOR West, which opened its doors in mid-2009. Until now, the depot has sent relief kits first to UMCOR Sager Brown in Baldwin, Louisiana, and from there the kits were shipped overseas. Read more about the shipment here.
