Children from First UMC, Henderson, Tx invite Rusk County residents to recycle their 'gently worn' shoes in an effort to help distribute shoes to people in need.

This year the children’s FRIENDS and CHAMPS groups of First United Methodist Church, Henderson are learning the impact of giving back in a very tangible way.   Children of all ages are collecting shoes for those in need across the world.

“We are asking everyone to check the back of their closet and find shoes that don’t fit, are not comfortable enough to wear and or those classified as has-beens,” FUMC Children’s Ministries Director Susan Evans said. “We are partnering with Soles4Soles to re-distribute these shoes to people who need them in America and around the world.”

Since 2005, Soles4Souls has distributed more than 13 million pairs of shoes because of the generosity and commitment of people and organizations like FUMC Henderson.

“By participating in this shoe drive, you are helping the victims of natural disasters—such as recent storms hitting the east coast,” Evans said. “And, helping people living in abject poverty--such as refugee camps in Uganda, and people in need of a fresh start--such as women in need of dress shoes for a new job.”

The children of FUMC Henderson will be collecting footwear and/or donations via the church office throughout the months of November and December.

The FUMC “FRIENDS” Children’s Choir will be presenting a Christmas Musical at FUMC Henderson in honor of the Souls4Souls project.  The musical is titled “The Christmas Shoe Tree.”

“An article in the local paper will encourage all to come out and see the children of this community on December 19th at 6pm,” she adds. “It will show you how something as simple as donating shoes can change the world.” Cost of admission for the musical is a pair of shoes. Cash donations will also be accepted for shipping costs of the shoes. For more information, call Susan Evans at 903-657-6588. Individuals and companies interested in donating can visit the organization’s website at www.giveshoes.org  or  www.fumchenderson.org.
