New Director of Youth/Young Adult Ministries

4/30/2012

The Texas Annual Conference will welcome Thera (pronounced Tera) Freeman to the Center for Congregational Excellence in June to serve as Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministries. Freeman, native "Show Me State" Missourian, dreamer, traveler, only child, creator of music and art is a 2005 graduate of Central Methodist University (Fayette, Mo). She majored in Religion and Psychology via extra classes such as Piano Pedagogy, Photography, and History of the English Language. From Central she then attended Duke Divinity School, balancing the M.Div. workload with singing in three Duke choirs, learning the intentionality of a life lived as pilgrimage and cheering on the Blue Devils.

Her unique background has given her multiple opportunities to interact with children and young adults in the course of doing ministry and doing life. Says Thera, “After graduating in 2008, I accepted a 3- year position in Uganda, East-Africa. Through the Mennonite Central Committee with the North Karamoja Diocese of the Church of Uganda (Anglican), I served as the Diocesan Education Secretary and School's Advisor to the Bishop. I oversaw 13 church-founded primary schools, the seminary students from the diocese, and the continuing education and edification of clergy and lay leaders.”

Thera is always ready for an adventure. “Upon returning to the United States from Uganda, I have become an apprentice shepherd on an organic farm in central Illinois where I’ve sang to lambs, trimmed hooves and learned – firsthand -- about Jesus' love for his flock.” When not singing, capturing photos, practicing yoga, corresponding or running she can be found reading, gardening, texting and tweeting (the international language of youth and young adults), up-cycling (the process of reusing unwanted items for something beneficial) and tinkering with my sewing machine.”

Effective June 1, Rev. Dan Conway will be appointed to Radiant UMC in Atascocita as Co-Pastor with his wife Rev. Christi Conway. Dan and Christi are excited to be serving in the same church for the first time!
