UMCOR Update - Ways You Can Make a Difference
There are a lot of children living in Somali camps for those displaced by the famine there. The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is helping to bring them relief through its partner, International Blue Crescent (IBC).
IBC reports that many of these children are carrying huge burdens in these camps. Just one example is Fawziya, 11, who lives in Korson Camp in the Somali capital. She is the principal caregiver for her brother, Abdullahi, who has a neurological ailment and is paralyzed.
UMCOR’s assistance is helping to ease the burden even for these littlest survivors. Read more.
You can help the children and their families in camps in Somalia and elsewhere in the Horn of Africa, where drought and violence threaten millions. Your gift to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450, is urgently needed. Please earmark your check “Horn of Arica Crisis.”
Christmas is right around the corner, but it’s not too late to finish up your gift list with something very special. When you give through UMCOR’s Gift Catalog, you give the gift of hope.
Your gifts help parents provide for their children, communities create access to clean water, families rebuild after disaster, and more. Consider how you can give a gift that will change the world by exploring UMCOR’s Gift Catalog today.
UMCOR is reaching out to the people in Van, Turkey, who suffered two major earthquakes in just three weeks. The quakes destroyed the community’s infrastructure, including the local hospital.
UMCOR is partnering with GlobalMedic to establish field hospitals that will provide for health needs in Van while the town recovers. UMCOR also is partnering with International Blue Crescent to provide food, medicine, blankets, heaters and other supplies to quake survivors.
You can help the people in Van and surrounding communities by giving to International Disaster Response, UMCOR Advance #982450 and designating your gift to “Turkey Earthquake.”
The annual UMCOR-run Disaster Response Academy helps personnel selected by annual conferences sharpen and increase their disaster response skills.
Approximately 90% of those who attended the 2011 Academy last month were first-time attendees.
“It was pleasing to see that annual conferences are carefully choosing new people to be involved in the ministry of disaster response,” said the Rev. Tom Hazelwood, head of UMCOR’s US Disaster Response unit.
The four-day event focused on basic training, including overview, emergency phase, relief work, and long-term recovery work.
