Jewett UMM present devotional books to Sheriffs department

By Robert Read, President United Methodist Men Palestine District

The United Methodist Men of Jewett United Methodist Church presented Sheriff Mike Price and all of his deputies with a personalized copy of a republished daily devotional book. Strength for Service to God and Country is a 400-page book of daily devotions that was first carried by soldiers in the armed forces during World War II.

This is the second such presentation made in Leon County by the Jewett UMM. Last month all the members of the Jewett Volunteer Fire Department were presented with their personalized copy. The Jewett United Methodist Men have made it their goal to provide a copy of this book to all public servants of Leon County that are in harms way.

The republishing of the devotional book was an Eagle Scout project by Evan Hunsberger, a Boy Scout from Southern California. Evan took on the project to honor his grandfather who served in WW II as a Navy Corpsman and carried a battered copy of Strength for Service to God and Country throughout his life. Evan received the help he needed to republish the book from the General Commission of United Methodist Men in Nashville, Tennessee.

The United Methodist Men have asked the Pentagon to distribute copies of the republished book to soldiers and the Pentagon has agreed to distribute 1million copies. The problem is they are not willing to pay for them, so the United Methodist Men have taken on the project to raise the $3 per copy printing cost.

You may donate to this worthwhile project in several ways. You can visit www.strengthforservice.com and donate online, or you can call the Jewett United Methodist Church at 903-626-4003 and request a donation form be mailed to you, or you can drop by the church at 233 Broadway in Jewett and make your donation in person. Checks may be sent to Jewett UMC, P.O. Box 254 Jewett, Texas, 75846, and made payable to Texas Conference UMM. All donations are tax deductible, so prayerfully consider how many books you can provide to our soldiers abroad.
