Strawbridge UMC to hold its First 'Blue Christmas' Service
See list of scheduled services from around the conference at: www.txcumc.org/bluechristmas.
By Karla Goolsby Director of Communications, Strawbridge UMC Blue? Yes, blue as in the blues - as in "I am feeling blue." For many people, the approaching Christmas holiday does not bring with it the joy and happiness that is advertised on television. The Christmas season is upon us and it seems that everywhere there are decorations and celebrations. But it reminds many people of what they have lost or perhaps never had. The anguish of broken or estranged relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weariness of ill health, the pain of isolation, the gut wrenching loss of a child, the loneliness of no longer having a beloved spouse to share each day – all these and more can contribute to a feeling of being alone, of “feeling blue” in the midst of a community which seems bent on “being happy.” There are years when we hurt at Christmastime. In recent years, churches have begun to recognize this reality and have become more attentive to the needs of people who are hurting during the holidays. In an effort to offer healing and hope to people who are living through dark times, The prayers, scriptures, and music included in the Blue Christmas service will acknowledge God’s presence for those who mourn or who are struggling. This service provides acceptance for us where we are while offering a time to experience the wonder and hope of Christmas. It also offers an opportunity, for those of us who are hurting, to see that we are not alone. For more information about the Blue Christmas service, call Strawbridge at 281-345-3600. Is your church offering ‘Longest Night of Year’ services for those facing challenges during the holiday season? Send details to Brant Mills, Web Manager at bmills@txcumc.org and a full listing will be posted on the Conference web site at www.txcumc.org/bluechristmas.
